Christian Education

Sunday School  Gary Rork, Superintendent

Woodhaven has Sunday School for all ages each Sunday throughout the year, summer included.

Infants and Toddlers

Nursery (birth-2 years) Becky Manale & Stephanie Garcia

The youngest Christian of Woodhaven experience God’s love and God’s provision through the care of our nursery attendants. Though this age group does not use a curriculum, Becky and Stephanie provide a happy and safe environment for our children to grow and explore God’s world. Our nursery beeper system allows parents to attend their own classes with confidence, knowing that they may be reached if their child needs them. The nursery is located just east of the church offices, at the far end of Hancock Hall, closest to the Education Building.

Pre-School (ages 3-5) Holly & Ernie Barry

As children transition from nursery to Sunday School, this class allows time for both structured learning and free play. The Pre-school Class utilizes the "Covenant People" curriculum and explores topics such at community, baptism and key Biblical characters. The Pre-school class meets in the education building, the first classroom on the left.

Journey Into Faith (grades K-5) Ann Ouzts & Noelle Williams, Coordinators

Journey Into Faith is our education program for elementary aged children. The program utilizes the Workshop Rotation Model. In the model, children explore Biblical stories through different workshops, such as art, drama, computers, and story telling. The different workshops work together to teach and reinforce our Biblical heritage. Shepherds accompany the children on their journey. Through out the year, a wide range of teachers will lead the different workshops, but the shepherds will remain the same.

Youth (grades 6-12)

Youth Sunday School

Middle School

This year in Sunday School, James Kinder is leading the middle school youth in an exploration of the New Testament using the New Covenant New Testament Survey curriculum.

High School

The high school Sunday School class is also using the We Believe curriculum and is taught by a team of teachers including Ed Pichon, Dan Klein, Cesar Cavazos and Ann Ouzts.  This fall’s curriculum is “Many Calls, Once Voice.”

Wednesdays @ Woodhaven

Each Wednesday evening during the school year, youth in grades 6-12 gather for study, fellowship and prayers from 7-8 in the Youth Room.  Our studies pair Biblical stories and current events to discover how the Bible continues to be relevant in today’s world.

Youth of Woodhaven

Sunday evenings are different every week.  Sometimes we meet for study, sometimes for worship, sometimes for service and sometimes we do nothing but play games and enjoy Christ in our midst, but each meeting, regardless of the topic is always filled with friendships, laughter and sharing, as together we learn what it means to be a part of the body of Christ.  Ordinarily, the Middle School meets from 5-7, and the high school meets from 6-8 with time spent together during the overlapping hour.  However sometime we have special events that affect our meeting times; please check the calendar for details.

Woodhaven is pleased to offer five Sunday School classes for adults, each with its own unique focus and personality.  If you are not currently involved in Sunday School, we invite you to come and explore the different opportunities to nurture your faith and spiritual journey.

Continuing Questions Class

Lead by Gary Swaim and Charlie Sullivan, Meet in Hancock Hall (on stage) - This class will seek to focus on concerns as they relate to each of us individually, on a day-by-day life as Christians.  The Continuing Questions class will begin a  5-session series, "Countering Pharaoh's Production-Consumption Society," using Walter Brueggemann's DVD program starting on October 12, 2008.

The Small Group Sunday School Class

Led by Bonnie Moseley - Meets in Parlor (west end of Hancock Hall)

The Small Group Sunday School Class seeks to balance good Christian fellowship and good Christian education by nurturing one another as together they engage in studies of both scripture and discipleship.  This class is known for its relationships and for the spirit of prayer in their midst.  Currently this class is studying, Genesis: God’s Creative Call.

Spirit Seekers Led by Charles Schmidt

Meets in Spirit Seeker’s room (north end of education building)

This group is known for its broad theological diversity and open dialogue.  Each Sunday, the class looks at current issues in the religious world, actions of the General Assembly, and an ongoing study on topical issues.   The Seekers Class is currently studying Earthy Mysticism: Spirituality for Unspiritual People, by Tex Sample.

Bible Study Coordinated by Priscilla Meadows

Meets in Handbell Room (northeast corner of sanctuary building)

The Bible Study class is best known for their careful and continuous study of the Bible.  Utilizing a multitude of Biblical tools and the collective wisdom gathered around the table, this class seeks to understand scripture and its claim on us as disciples of Jesus Christ.  Currently, this class is in the midst of the Gospel of Luke.

The "New" Sunday School Class (To be named) Organized by Amy Rork & Courtney Komlosi Meets in Prophet’s Playhouse (off of the Oasis on the south end of the education building)

This class was organized for those who are looking for something different in Sunday School.  What that “something different” is exactly, has not been clearly defined, and is still evolving.  For now the goals are to pray, study and support one another on their spiritual journey.  Currently, the class is using the Horizon’s Bible Study, but is open to the spirit’s leading in future curriculum selection.  If this sounds like something you might be interested in, you are invited to come and help make it a class you would like to attend.

 Inquirers

Throughout the year, we offer a 4-week Inquirer’s class for folks who are new to the Presbyterian tradition, or to Woodhaven. We cover everything from Reformed theology to why we do what we do in worship. Although we cannot go too much in depth in only four weeks, it is a good stepping-stone and introduction to this particular family of faith. We will meet in the Bride's Room.  If you have any questions, please contact  Pastor Michael Thompson at mthompson@woodhavenpres.org

All Sunday School Classes are under the direction of our Sunday School Superintendent, Gary Rork.

Other opportunities in education:

VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL

Each summer we offer a special educational opportunity for our children. In Vacation Bible School, we spend one week exploring Bible stories in a fun and exciting way. Every year is different! We offer classes for children ages 3-5th grade, with leadership opportunities for youth in grades 6-12. VBS 2009 will be June.

CONFIRMATION

Confirmation is a time of preparation as youth prepare to take on the responsibility of adult membership in the church and confirm their faith as their own. This is an intense study offered to youth in grades 8 and up covering topics such as Bible knowledge, theology, church history and government and Christian discipleship. During this ten-week course, confirmands will take an in-depth look at their own faith journey and the roles that they, God and the faith community play in that journey. Adult mentors join confirmands on their journey and covenant to be faith partners. For more information on confirmation, please contact Pastor Michael Thompson at mthompson@woodhavenpres.org
